Don't want too - but I might HAVE too........

With a possible CAT3 or CAT4 hurricane coming to Ft Lauderdale area I may be forced to tow the fiver north. My DH always does the towing so I have NO experience - but I do know that our fiver won't survive 145 mile per hour winds. If the storm is gonna take my house (and I lived thru Andrew), then at least I got a place to sleep while doing repairs! I want to leave but the DH wants to board up and hunker down. Having lived thru Andrew, I have NO desire to do that. Any tips for a first time, frantic, tower! Gees, I always knew I should learn how to do it - never thought I might be forced to do it. I can get 280 miles on one tank of fuel and I carry 2 extra 5 gallon cans for another 100 miles. My biggest fear is getting in and out of a gas station. I am gonna do my best, but I am so afraid I'll make a mistake. I fear more for my DH who is insisting on staying. I keep telling him he CAN'T hold the roof on from inside the closet floor! Jo:?

RE: Myakka RV Resort in Venice Fl

I have been to the state park at Myakka, didn't know there was a resort. If you are talking about the state park then there is a front campground section and a back campground section. I'd stay in the front. Never been there longer than a weekend. Not much to do there. You can hike, bike and canoe and that is it! Sites won't be that large - don't know what size you need. No store is around the corner, maybe 5-7 miles away. We like the park because we go for the canoeing which is fantastic there. Good luck, Jo

RE: Should We Skip TT and go 5'er?

We went from a tent-end hybrid to a fiver.......... We did this on 2/1/08 and we love our fiver........ I seriously doubt we'll ever change up to anything but a bigger or better fifth wheel. My DH says the towing is great compared to the other one. We have a 2003, 7.3L diesel and it is fantastic to towing the hybrid with out GMC Envoy - night & day - according to the hubby! Good luck with your quest! Jo

RE: Highest winds a Fiver can take?

I live in South Florida and by the time I get the hurricane shutters up to get the house prepared, the roads would already be full! Anyway, try to out run a hurricane that has no idea where it is going......... Doesn't always work! Look what TS Fay did - hit the coast 4 times - just zig and zagged. In Florida you can only go North or South - not East or West - so running isn't really an option! If I do run, say to Georgia, no guarantee I can get back to my house to see what condition it is in. I'll stay and weather the storm and hope my insurance kicks in like it should! Jo

RE: First tow test...new (old) diesel TV

We bought our 2003 7.3 diesel about 2 1/2 years ago with 82,000 miles on it. Just turned 102,000 the other day. Our tranny went out (while on vacation, 1/2 way UP the mountain) and our gauges never went over 190 degrees - just time to go, I guess - Anyway, we now have a Jasper transmission with 3 year/100,000 mile warranty so we hope the motor AND the transmission will give us good service. As we only put about 10,000 miles a year on our truck anyway, we hope it'll go QUITE a FEW years! Jo oh yea, around town the temp for the tranny is 160 degrees and towing our 10,000 fiver up/down mountain is about 190-200 degrees!

RE: Wekiwa Springs SP

We are going to the the Rock Springs run this time also. We went the opposite direction last time. I heard canoes can make it there and now that the water will be higher......... shouldn't have any spots where we have to get out and trek the canoe over! Everyone have a great weekend, I sure hope I do! Jo

RE: Fisheating Creek CG Flooded???

We are hoping to go there the 2nd weekend of October - by then all will be back to normal. Feel sorry for the people who live there in their trailers - there are 4-5 families who live out there full time ! Jo

RE: OBX and Tropical Depression Eight

I live in South Florida so, of course, I keep an eye on ALL storms. We leave tomorrow for a state park in central Florida. By Monday we'll have storms to the left and storms to the right and if I am lucky I can zip south and get home before any of them visit me! Jo

RE: Wekiwa Springs SP

Russ, You have to launch the kayak ( in our case our canoe ) from the rental area of their canoe people. You do have to drive to the parking area, then carry your stuff down. It is a trek down there........but it is worth it. We usually have to make two trips - I stay with the canoe & he goes back & gets the rest of the stuff then we take off. Jo

RE: Wekiwa Springs SP

I just posted a few days ago about this park, we've been there 2 times and go again tomorrow. The Spring re-opened Wednesday (due to TS Fay) and now the Canoe rental is opened up again as of today! We love this park. We go lots of canoeing - and the scenery is wonderful. We like sites 45 and 47..... We'll be in site 47 this Labor Day Weekend. Enjoy! Jo

Well, if GUSTAVE doesn't come to my house; we'll be going to Wekiva Springs SP in Apopka for the long weekend to do some canoeing! Jo

RE: Wekiva SP this weekend in FL

Yep, I noticed the web site does say swimming is open. I will call Thursday and see if the canoe run for rentals is open or not. We have our own canoe, but if water is moving fast, we won't be able to turn around and canoe back and I don't know of a shuttle service there. We were thinking of Kings Landing to do tubing - wonder if that is open? With Hurricane Gustave on the horizon - we just might not go anyway - because if it pulls a "FAY" on us - we'll get stuck ! Anyone know of Reserve America's time frame for a cancellation - don't mind paying the cancellation fee if I am the one cancelling......no biggie...... Jo

Wekiva SP this weekend in FL

I just got off Florida State Parks web site & it shows that the Spring is closed for swimming and no canoe rentals to go down the Wekiva River! Bummer ---we have reservations this weekend. No sense in going if we can't do either of the above. Wonder if Reserve America will refund us our money since the only two things there is to do there is closed due to the recent storms? I am going to call on Thursday anyway to the park ranger office to see if anything has changed since today! Hate to make a 3 hour drive if all I get to do is swat mosquitoes after the BIG rain they had! Jo

RE: Pulled the trigger on new FW

MyakkaTT, Welcome to the fiver world and this forum! We go to Myakka State Park all the time to canoe..... maybe we'll see you on the river some time - if you do that stuff! Enjoy your new camper - we got ours in January after having a 21 ft hybrid - Man-o-Man what a difference! Happy Travels to you and your family. Jo

RE: Firestone air bags

We have the Firestone Air Bags with the onboard compressor and gauge. We are happy we did it that way. I just set the gauge when we load up the fiver and don't even have to think about it again. Very dependable! Jo

RE: Used Diesel Mileage Opinions

We bought our truck ( in sig ) 2 2/1 years ago with 82,000 miles on it. It just turned 102,000 last week. Only problem was transmission went out (during vacation of course) at 101,000. It is fixed now and running great! Jo

RE: Lake Griffin SP, Fruitland, FL

I would hope I can get my 31 ft fiver in a 40 ft site.......but if they are narrow and I can't open my slides, then we'll do a pull through. We had a 40 ft site at Paynes Prairie 2 weeks ago and we could barely get into it because of the trees in front of our site. Took the DH a few tries to get it in. Once we did, all was okay, but he threw out a few 'choice' words before he got her in place! Thanks, Jo

RE: Tomoka State Park FL - 34 foot sites ? fit a 36 footer ?

When we had our travel trailer the first thing we noticed besides the sites being very shallow was the low lying trees. We knew that when we upgraded to our fiver, we'd never be going back....... Like it there, just can't get in there and don't wanna worry about ripping up my roof or knocking off my a/c to do it either. Jo
